Challenge:

Wild-caught fish are a primary source of nutrients in current aquaculture feeds, and natural fishery populations are consequently being depleted to feed farmed fish. The world urgently needs new sustainable sources of protein.

Innovation:

AgriProtein is leading a new industry called nutrient recycling. Using fly larvae fed on food waste, AgriProtein is producing a new large scale and sustainable source of natural protein. Insect larvae is the natural food of fish in streams and the nutritional compositions of AgriProtein’s products are as good as fishmeal and better than soya.

Impact:

A mature AgriProtein based industry would eliminate the need for all fishmeal trawling. This will help our seas replenish their natural stocks, while sustainably supplying farmed fish with their required nutrients. For every tonne of MagMeal produced there is an environmental cost saving of $2,500.
